The Sommen fishery conservation organisation aims to develop a long-term sustainable strategy for the fish conservation in Lake Sommen by:
- Preserve and strengthen the weak stock of unique and endangered species such as trout and char.
- Customize and develop the fishing to a sustainable level.
- Restore damaged aquatic environments, and limiting external influences.
- Building local knowledge and skills for the future fisheries management.
The long-term sustainable fishery conservation efforts help increase the area attractiveness for both the year-round residents around the lake and for visitors interested in nature and culture.
This new approach replaces the older, traditional fisheries management, which primarily consisted of farming and restocking of fish to the enhancement and conservation of the lake's fish stocks. The strategy thus entails a more comprehensive, long-term and sustainable perspective of the lake and rivers the fishing community, as regards both conservation biology as a harvest.
